Office of Student Life and Retention

College is about students. It’s about creating an environment that captures the imaginations of students and connects them with the adventure of learning––connects YOU with YOUR adventure of learning.

The Office of Student Life and Retention is charged with organizing campus activities, creating events and programs—moments that are both memorable and exciting—that help to make the college experience what it ought to be. We daily work with various student groups, such as the Student Association and a wide assortment of clubs and other organizations, to be sure your specific needs are addressed.

Student life is closely associated with the spiritual life on campus as well. Our staff is very interested in helping you access the spiritual resources available here, including the Chaplain, and helping to organize chapel and worship experiences that are meaningful to you and help you progress in your spiritual journey.

The Office of Student Life and Retention is here to assist you in figuring out college, as a new experience, and dealing with the challenges that come from living among your fellow students, faculty members and others who are part of this community. We have developed several specific tools, such as our Student Life Handbook and our Residence Life Handbook, to help you understand your opportunities here, along with our expectations. We want your experience here to be fun. We also want to be sure your central objective for coming here—to study and get your degree—is wholly supported by the environment we create.

Sometimes, the help we provide you is just having a friend to talk with. If your counseling needs are complex, though, we can direct you to other campus resources put in place specifically to help you. Other times, our conversations may have to be more direct. Our staff may need to participate in interventions that are aimed at redirecting your energies or responding to circumstances where you may not have shown the most mature judgment. In these cases, our intent is also your best good, and we will always endeavor to be sure you are respected and heard as we work our way through these processes.

The “Retention” part of our Office of Student Life and Retention involves an intentional effort to listen to your concerns—informally and though more formal methods, such as surveys––and to work toward addressing situations and circumstances that might make your stay here less attractive than it might be.

At CUC, we view ourselves as a community. Just as our recruiters worked so hard to bring you here, so that you could become part of this community, we in retention work to keep you here. We not only want you to come back each semester, all the way through to your degree, but we also want you to tell your friends about your experience here, and to urge them to come as well.

You can find the Office of Student Life and Retention in Wilkinson Hall on the fourth floor. Our office is in room 438 and you can reach us at extension 4525.
